Gratitude Lock

One grateful sentence opens your apps.

Gratitude Lock shields the apps that pull you in. When you reach for one, you meet a calm pause instead. Write one grateful sentence and your apps open for a while. That's the whole product.

How it works

  1. Pick the apps that eat your time. You choose them with Apple's own Screen Time picker. We never see which apps you chose.
  2. Meet a pause instead of a feed. Opening a locked app shows a quiet block screen with one way through.
  3. Write one sentence, get your apps back. One grateful sentence opens them for a window you set: 15 minutes, 30, an hour, or the rest of the day. When the window ends, the lock returns on its own.

The pause is always short and the door always opens. Gratitude Lock is not a parental control and never takes your phone hostage.

The science, stated honestly

Two findings from the research literature sit behind this design.

Friction works on usage. In a randomized trial of about 2,000 people, self-set app limits cut use by 22 minutes a day, sustained across 12 weeks (Allcott, Gentzkow and Song, American Economic Review, 2022). A field study of the pause app one sec found people walked away from roughly 1 in 3 gated app opens (PNAS, 2023).

Gratitude writing helps a little, and one sentence is enough. Across 145 studies and nearly 25,000 people, gratitude writing produced a small but consistent improvement in wellbeing (PNAS, 2025). In the same analysis, writing more often did not produce bigger effects, so a single sentence is a defensible practice, not a watered-down one.

These are findings about app limits and gratitude writing in general, not measurements of Gratitude Lock itself. The effect on wellbeing is small, and blocking apps has not been shown to improve mood. We built the product around what the evidence supports: a pause that reduces pull, and a sentence worth keeping.

Private by design

Your journal never leaves your phone. Entries are stored only on your device, and there is no account, no cloud sync, and no server that could read them.

Blocking runs on Apple's Screen Time system, which keeps your app choices opaque even to us. Screen Time data is never used for advertising and never shared. Read the full privacy policy.
